From a 1940's booklet that is in bits & pieces.
MATERIALS:
14 Skeins Quaker Natural Fluffydown
1 pair wooden Needles, #11
1 crochet hook Size 10
1 Steel Crochet Hook, Size 1
GAUGE: 3 sts= 1". K Pattern
PATTERN: (A multiple of 12 sts, plus 8.)
1st Row: P12 *K6 - P6,
repeat from across row ending with P13 instead of P6.
2nd Row: K7, *K2tog, do not drop the sts from left needle. K again in
first of these K2 sts, drop both from left needle. Repeat from * 2 times more.
P6. Repeat from first * across row ending K7.
3rd Row: Same as Row 1.
4th Row: K7 *K1, **K2tog, do not drop the sts from left needle. K again
in first of these K2 sts, drop both from left needle. Repeat from ** once,
K1, P6; repeat from first * across row ending K7.
These 4 rows complete pattern.
BACK:
Cast on 68 sts. Work in
pattern for 3 inches.
Next row (right side) decrease 1 st in each P panel by purling the 3rd and 4th P
sts tog. Work 3 inches even.
Decrease 1 st in each P panel across row: work until piece measures 12.5 inches.
Armhole:
Bind of 5 sts at beginning of
next 2 row, then decrease 1 st each side every other row -- 4 times.
Meanwhile decrease 1 st in each P panel once more (P2). Work even for 6.5 inches
from last decrease at armhole.
Shoulder:
Bind off 4 sts at beginning of the next 6 rows. Bind off remaining 10 sts for
neck.
FRONT:
Cast on 42 sts. Work in pattern as
follows:
1st Row: K1, P8, K1 (cable border) P1, K6, P6, K6, P6, K7.
2nd Row: P7 *K2tog, do not drop the sts from left needle. K again in the
first of these K2 sts; drop both sts from left needle. Repeat from * 2 times
more, P6. Repeat from first * across row ending K1, P1, slip the next 4 sts off
on a crochet hook (slip off with hooked end) and hold in back of work. K the
next 4 sts from left needle, K the 4 sts. from straight end of hook, (cable
twist at front border) P1.
3rd Row: Same a Row 1.
4th Row: P7, *K1, **K2tog, do not drop the sts from left needle. K again
in the first of these K2 sts; drop
both sts from left needle. Repeat from ** once, K1. P6: repeat from first *
across row ending K1, P1, K8, P1.
Work decreases in each P6 panel same as back to underarm (36 sts).
Armhole:
Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge then
decrease 1 st at same edge every other row -- 4 times. Work 4 rows even.
Decrease 1 st in each P panel once (P2) at the same time decrease 1 st at neck
edge after cable border every other row until 22 sts remain.
Work even, when armhole measures same length as back armhole bind off 4 sts at
armhole edge 3 times.
Continue working on cable for 2 inches. Bind off. Work other side to correspond.
SLEEVES:
Cast on 6 sts.
1st Row: P back.
2nd Row: Cast on 6 sts, P6. Work pattern on next 6 sts.
3rd Row: Cast on 6 sts. K6, P6, K6. Continue to cast on 6 sts at
beginning of every row until 42 sts on needle
(keep the continuity of pattern).
(Right Side) K6, pattern st 6, P6, pattern st 6, P6, pattern st 6, K6.
Work even until sleeve measures 16 inches at center. Bind of 5 sts at beginning
of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st each side every other row -- 3 times.
Meanwhile decrease 1 st in each P panel across the row. Work even in pattern
until armhole measures 6.5 inches from first bind off at underarm. On right
side, work 13 sts in pattern. Turn *K the first st from left hand needle and
first st from right hand needle tog. Work 5 sts of center pattern. K next 2 sts
tog. Turn. Repeat from * across row. Repeat decreases at each end of every row
until 6 center sts remain. Bind off. This forms the square shoulder.
FINISHING:
Sew all seams. Sew sleeves in place. Sew cable ends together and sew over bound
off sts at back of neck.
With wooden crochet hook, work 1 row sc around the entire garment and around the
sleeves.
